Ten Questions With … Jesse Kealy

Instructor, Plumbers and Pipefitters Apprenticeship Training Of Kansas (PPATKS)

In each issue of Working Pressure, we ask 10 questions to a training coordinator or instructor of an ASSE-approved training provider. Some questions are work related, some are personal, and others are just for fun. We learn our trade through local colleagues, mentors, and instructors, but what can we learn from others across the country?
In this issue, we’ll get to know Jesse Kealy, HVAC Instructor for Plumbers and Pipefitters Apprenticeship Training of Kansas (PPATKS).
If you’d like us to ask 10 questions to your ASSE-approved training coordinator or instructor, send us a note telling us why at editor@workingpressuremag.com.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN AFFILIATED WITH YOUR TRAINING CENTER/SCHOOL?
I served my apprenticeship from 2011-2016 with UA Local 441 and have been a full-time HVAC instructor with the program since 2019.

WHAT IS YOUR BACKGROUND AS IT RELATES TO YOUR OCCUPATION?
I was lucky to be directed toward HVAC by my grandpa when I was 16 years old and enrolled in technical school. Directly after graduating from technical school and high school, I entered the HVAC trade as a commercial/industrial HVAC technician and started my apprenticeship with UA Local 441. Between working in the field and instructing, the HVAC industry is the only field that I know.

HOW DID YOU BECOME INTERESTED IN ASSE CERTIFICATION PROGRAMS?
The instructors that I had during apprenticeship school did an excellent job of explaining the importance of taking advantage of certifications and maintaining them after graduating from the apprenticeship program. I am happy I listened to them and took the ASSE backflow tester certification class.

WHAT ASSE CERTIFICATIONS ARE YOU CURRENTLY OFFERING?
Our training facility offers the backflow certification as an elective to any of our apprentices, but it’s a requirement for plumbing apprentices to graduate. It’s a certification I implore all the HVAC apprentices to pursue, because it could provide future employment opportunities for them.

WHY IS BACKFLOW CERTIFICATION IMPORTANT TO YOUR SCHOOL?
Backflow is a very important certification because it’s a certification that helps protect our most valuable commodity. It’s also a steady and rewarding facet of the trade to pursue.

HOW DO YOU GET STUDENTS INTERESTED IN THE CLASSES YOU ARE OFFERING?
I think the secret to garnering interest in any class is to have a passion for teaching it, as well as a lesson plan that conveys the material to all learning styles. A well-balanced lesson plan that has several different activities will help keep students engaged with even the toughest material.

WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST ACCOMPLISHMENT?
I never thought the trade would bring me to a position where I can share my passion for HVAC with apprentices and get to travel the country to be a part of various committees.

WHAT’S SOMETHING YOU LOVE LEARNING ABOUT?
Outside of being a mechanical code enthusiast, I enjoy learning anything about American history and I collect cookbooks.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE WAY TO SPEND A DAY OFF?
I enjoy getting a workout in, taking a cruise in my Mustang, or going on a camping trip with my dog and my girlfriend.

WHAT’S YOUR MOST PRIZED POSSESSION AND WHY?
I am very fortunate to have a great family and friends; they make every endeavor and struggle worth the pursuit. Past that, my Weber 22-inch kettle grill always seems to bring joy and happiness whenever I use it.
