Lives Depend Upon It

As I reflect on the theme of this edition of Working Pressure, “Fire Protection,” it reminds me of the importance of fire protection systems and how ASSE supports the installation, testing, and maintenance of these lifesaving systems. Let’s review how some ASSE fire protection standards play an integral role in protecting life and property.

ASSE 7010 and ASSE 7020 Certifications for Residential Potable Water Fire Protection System Installers (7010) and Inspectors (7020) for One and Two Family Dwellings are for individuals who can demonstrate their knowledge of installing and/or inspecting residential potable water fire protection systems.

In 2015, ASSE developed ASSE/IAPMO/ANSI Series 15000-2020, Professional Qualifications Standard for the Inspection, Testing and Maintenance of Water-Based Fire Protection Systems, to establish minimum qualifications for the inspection, testing, and maintenance of water-based fire protection systems and address a level of competency beyond the requirements of the NFPA 25 standard.

ASSE/IAPMO/ANSI Series 27000-2022, Professional Qualifications Standard for Hybrid Fire Extinguishing Systems Personnel, is the latest standard developed to support the fire protection industry.

“Special application hybrid fire extinguishing systems require specialized training to obtain the knowledge necessary to design, install, service and maintain,” said Ken Schneider, chairperson of the ASSE Series 27000 Working Group and Training Specialist for the UA’s Education & Training Department. “In fire protection, you only have one chance to get it right — lives depend upon it.”

These are just a few of the many examples of how ASSE standards support the fire protection industry. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the men and women working in the sprinkler fitting trade, as well as the manufactures, designers, and engineers who work in the fire protection industry. The important work you do saves lives and protects property — you deserve to be recognized for the great work you do!
