The International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials (IAPMO®) and ASSE International have published ANSI/CAN/ASSE/IAPMO 1055-2020, Performance Requirements for Chemical Dispensers with Integral Backflow Protection, as both an American National Standard and National Standard of Canada. The ANSI/CAN/ASSE/IAPMO 1055-2020 supersedes the previous edition, ASSE 1055-2018. The binational standard is available in both English and French.
The ANSI/CAN/ASSE/IAPMO 1055 standard specifies performance requirements for chemical dispensing systems to provide a means of mixing potable water with chemicals to provide the user with a ready-for-use chemical solution. Devices covered by this standard are intended for stationary installations, mobile devices where the orientations are fixed, and handheld devices.
ASSE/IAPMO 1055-compliant devices protect against high‐hazard substances entering the potable water system. The standard’s goal is to provide for dilution of a concentrated solution inline such that the ready‐to‐use, mixed solution can be dispensed with minimal waste and footprint. Chemical dispensers are comprised of two main components from the inlet: a backflow prevention device and a mixing chamber. This basic design can manifest itself in a variety of products, whether it be a bottle filling device in a janitorial closet for cleaning solutions, a soap mixer at a commercial car wash station, laundry systems, or dishwashers.

ASSE International is an ANSI-accredited standards developer and product certification body comprised of members representing all disciplines of the plumbing and mechanical industries. ASSE’s product performance standards, professional qualifications standards, professional certification and product listing programs aim to improve the performance and safety of plumbing and mechanical systems. Learn more about ASSE International at www.asse-plumbing.org.
For more than 30 years, IAPMO has developed plumbing product standards as American National Standards, initially as the Secretariat for the ANSI Z124 Technical Committee in 1984, and since 2005 independently under its own American National Standards Institute (ANSI) accredited standards development procedures. In 2018, IAPMO received accreditation through the Standards Council of Canada (SCC) for development of National Standards of Canada, thus accepting the responsibility for development of CAN/IAPMO-designated standards.
Furthermore, IAPMO Standards has published an installation standard (ASSE/IAPMO IS 32-2020) for chemical dispensing equipment. ASSE/IAPMO IS 32 specifies requirements for the installation of chemical dispensing equipment, including connections with hot‐ and cold‐water supply and distribution systems within buildings that comply with the ASSE/IAPMO 1055 document. Please visit the IAPMO Online Store to purchase a copy of the IS 32 installation standard.
