Driving Progress

As we embark on another quarter, it is imperative to reflect on the pivotal role played by standards in our industry, particularly the ASSE Series 5000 Cross-Connection Control standards. Since its inception in 1987 and the publication of its first edition in 1990, this series has served as the bedrock of professionalism and quality assurance in backflow prevention.

The ASSE Series 5000 was born out of a recognized need within our industry for standardized qualifications for individuals involved in backflow prevention. Through meticulous development and refinement, this series established minimum industry requirements for backflow prevention assembly testers, repairers, and cross-connection control surveyors. It stands as a testament to our commitment to safeguarding public health and preserving water resources.

One of the key strengths of the ASSE Series 5000 lies in its adaptability and responsiveness to industry advancements. Over the years, the series has undergone multiple revisions to keep pace with evolving technologies and best practices. The most recent revision, released in 2022, further enhances the standards, ensuring their relevance and effectiveness in today’s ever-changing landscape.

The significance of these standards cannot be overstated, especially in light of current challenges such as water scarcity and the increasing use of recycled water systems. By mandating proper training, testing, and experience, ASSE Series 5000 sets the bar for excellence in backflow prevention, providing peace of mind to communities and water utilities alike.

Behind the scenes, dedicated professionals from diverse backgrounds have contributed their expertise to the development and revision of ASSE Series 5000. Their commitment to consensus-building and collaboration has been instrumental in shaping these standards and driving progress in our field.

As we move forward, let us reaffirm our dedication to upholding the ASSE Series 5000 Cross-Connection Control standards. By adhering to these standards, we not only ensure the integrity of our profession but also fulfill our duty to protect public health and preserve our most precious resource – water.
